Session 29: Orc Bacon for All

Here are some notes on what can be done before combat:

Basically replace the first “initiative” with a few rounds for non combat action.

First, Talkers can try and demand a parley, or shout threats, or say whatever witty one liners.

While they talk, Runners who don’t want to be involved with the fight can head for cover.

Then everyone who still wants to participate can do something first, like kick over a table or pour out some oil on the floor or ready their weapons, enough that maybe you could affect the situation if you’re smart but no hard rules to encourage OSR rulings instead.

Then, fight as normal. Fights remain somewhat “I hit you then you hit me” but at least there’s the opportunity for dynamic situation altering actions before you break out the d20s.

Same combat sequence as before continues.

The magic user and cleric run in to a peculiar old man pushing an old cart who recognizes them as the dungeon delvers.  He wears a worn reddish colored hooded robe, pushes a cart of antiques.  His name is Fiznab.  He looks a bit like he is lost in thought and loses his thoughts as he speak to them.  He finally gets his words out.  His great great great uncle worked in the dungeon long ago and had lost some things in that dungeon and he really wants them back.  He will pay up to 1500gp for each item.  If you find them please visit his shop. (Its on the outskirts of town in an area you have never been) Ask the giant stone head for directions to the items, he will help.

4 daggers, each with a different colored gem in its pommel. Red, White, Brown and Blue. He is also looking for an idol/statuette of a beast with a tentacled face.

They agree to look for the items for him, the old man gets excited.  As the cleric and magic user confer amongst themselves they look back and the strange old man is gone.

2 more hires are acquired.  This time some professionals, at least they were arrogant enough.  Both good sized fighting men.  They want 5% of treasure for each delve into the dungeon.  Slim and Anubis at your service!

The crew heads back to the dungeon.  They decide to take a detour to a few areas they haven't been.  They check their map and realize they may have missed a few rooms.  They stumble into some zombies but Gregoire the Holy flashes his mighty cross and they run like hell.

The crew heads to  an unopened door.  Gregoire opens it and everyone is kinda surprised.  It reeks of bacon in there.  There are 7 mad max looking crazies eating from a spit over a fire.  Beside the fire is an orcs head. One of the crazies offers Tagar a bite of his meat, Tagar shies away. Irritated, the man offers it to the druid.  He takes it but at the same time is trying to sloppily cast a spell on the guy.  His charm spell fails and they mad max crew get mad.

A fight ensues and along with the help of a web spell to tangle them up, they are quickly dispatched.
