Session 3: The Lazy Wizard and the Broken Nose

Recap for 6/21/2019
Day 3

Session 3:
The team is in town resting and buying more equipment.  The team makes their way straight past the gate house, past the waterfall and towards the dungeon entrance at the end of the canyon.  Graffiti-covered walls and a bare, well-worn floor; ceiling arches 30‘ overhead; spiral staircase descends down a hole in the center of the floor. The graffiti consists of names of adventurers who have come this way and messages written in Kobold (―Clean up trash, dumb men!). The spiral stairs descend way down into the darkness.  After some discussion the group decides that there must be another way into the dungeon and that this maybe a more common or dangerous route and possibly a trap.

They make their way up to a small copse of tress against the north canyon wall and discover a cave entrance.  This has to be the way in!  They enter cautiously allowing the infravision seeing elf to go in first.  They make their way around the rooms in this cave and find a rabid raccoon.  The druid drops off some food as he passes him.  After searching in a few rooms and finding nothing the group opens up a door.  For some reason the Thief is crouched down in front of the door while the half orc fighter is forcing the door open.  As the door opens a burlap sack filled with sand swings down from the ceiling just inside the door, the bag of sand smacks right into the Orcs face breaking his nose.  No real damage (2 HP) but it was a surprise. The room is a dead end.

They make their way around the rooms and find a spitting cobra lurking in the corner of a room filled with rubble, gravel and debris.  The group decides to put it out of its misery with a crossbow bolt.  Moving on to another room they find a big stone throne with an open pit right in front of it that’s about 10’ wide and 20’ deep and has rusty iron spikes at the bottom.  The throne had a button on one of the arms that may have once been the trigger to set off that pit trap.  There wasn’t much else in the room to note so it looked like another dead end.

The magic-user says she wants to search all the walls and floors and ceiling “everywhere in everyway” but stands there and does nothing.  The group decides this could take a while so they fan out and each start looking at the walls and floors to see if they can find anything.  The PC searching the north wall finds a crack in the wall which allows the torch smoke to seep through.  It’s certainly a shoddy attempt at creating a hidden passage. It pushes right in.  Nothing happens to everyone’s relief.
On the other side of the door is a dark room, the thief, giddy with excitement, rushes right in at top speed.  He launches himself right into a solid object, he doubles over from the contact but is otherwise unharmed.  In the room is a massive (15‘ × 10‘) stone table; wrecked shelving; litter and debris.  The group searches all around the room and finds nothing.  Someone decided to bash the table apart and inside one of the table legs was a hollow compartment.  Inside the group finds 50 gp, a potion of extra-healing, and a ring.  The brass ring is enameled with bands of rainbow hues. It radiates magic, but wearing the ring has no discernible effect.  The wizard was bullied by the half orc to taste the potion and see what it is.  The wizard had a hang nail that mysteriously healed itself but that was about it.  It must be a healing potion.  Later on in town the group discovered what it was.

After some time banging away loudly at the table a group of (4) Kobolds wearing work belts and carrying tools ambles into the room.  Even though everyone was keeping watch the group startled the PCs.  They were interrogated and paid for information after seeming amiable to discussion rather then swordplay.  The PCs and the Kobolds decided that each other were not a threat and had a few questions for each other…The Wizard using her broken Kobold spoke to the 3 foot tall workers.  The Kobolds stated they were on clean up duty for their boss “Trustee”  He has them on a schedule.  The PCs asked where the dungeon entrance was, and they discovered that the dark stairs “down down down” is the only way in that the Kobolds know about (or were willing to disclose). The Druid asked for an escort and the Kobolds kindly refused once again using the excuse of their duties.  They were grateful that you killed the cobra since they were unable to clean that room with it there.  The Wizard notes that the little buggers were pointing and snickering at the Orc, offhandedly commenting on how their “funny trick” must have broken his nose.  The Kobolds were offered some silver for more info and they gladly mentioned that their boss runs the dungeon market place called “Kobold Korners” in the dungeon.  You can buy food, drink and take a break there, make some trades.  They highlighted that it is neutral territory as well so no fighting!  On the way out the druid decided that he can’t help the raccoon other then sending him to a permanent slumber.

The group decided to head back to town and rest, contemplate the days events and see what’s going on in the tavern.   In town the PCs heard some rumors, the Orcs and Goblins of the dungeons are sworn enemies, there is a natural gold vain somewhere in the dungeon.  While chatting around the tavern the group notices a man staring them down from off in the corner.  Once confronted the man talked to them about a previous group of adventurers that went into StoneHell and failed to return. Assuming they are dead, one of the adventurer’s cousins has come to town, hoping to retrieve a magic signet ring so that they might inherit the nearby family estate. The PCs agreed to help, for a fee of course.  The elf mentioned that a group of dwarves he met the day before are also on their way to StoneHell on a research mission.  He didn’t give many specifics but he also mentioned that they agreed to help.  He really must want that ring!  Lets see who gets there first!
