Day 4
The crew decides that after a good night's sleep and some light weapons shopping that they would head back to StoneHell bright and early. They arrive without incident and traverse through the rubble that was once a part of the gatehouse. The crew decides it's best to go along the north side of the canyon to see if they can find the cave entrance they saw a few days before.
The thief creeps into the entrance to the cave using his infravision to guide him. On one of the walls he sees some glowing text:
R. –
As agreed, the jewels await you two levels down in the
chamber past the acolytes’ cells. How you deal with the wasps
is your own concern!
– M
He calls in the group but only he and the half orc see the message because they have infravision. In the next room they find a small glowing stick they deduce was used to write the message. They pocket the stick of glowy chalk and move on. In one room they see a beetle looking thing with red glowing tentacles eating a baby goat. They group slowly backs away and moves on.
They don't find anything else in the caves and leave back to the canyon. They decide to make those may to the spiral staircase they found at the end of the canyon. On the way they see a large copse of trees. They decide to check it out on their way to the end of the canyon. As the group moves into the trees the magic user, who was lagging behind saw that the PCs seemed to vanish as they walked in in front of him. Once he walked into the trees they reappeared as if they were always there. Strange phenomenon. What the hell just happened? Everyone is ok, Boone got hurt. Let's just keep moving. In the forest they see a huge black bear roaming around minding his own business. The PCs wisely decide to leave it alone and just head to the staircase.
The thief heads down the stairs first. They give him a good headstart and the rest of the crew fires up a torch and follows him after he gives the OK. They go down the spiral staircase for what seemed like forever. Anxiety is rising as the musty, mildew unclean stench wafts up at them from below. They all get to the bottom of the stairs and find themselves in a room with one closed door and 4 open exits. The north west corridor has archways resembling fanged ogre mouths with murals of
cavorting imps on walls in between them.
After some scanning of the room and starting their map the crew notes, after peeking around that the immediate hallways are 10‘
wide with ceilings that rise 15‘ high at the center and
arch down to 10‘ high where the ceiling meets the walls.
This room has 15‘ high walls and vaulted ceilings that rise an additional 5‘ above them, resulting in 20‘ tall ceilings
at the apex. The stonework of the dungeon is rough-faced limestone blocks, flagstones, and ceiling slabs, although the floors have been worn smooth by regular traffic. Cracks and crevices are common, as are signs of regular, but poor quality, repair and maintenance.
They choose to head up the northwest corridor and after passing through both of the ogre mouths they get to a 4 way intersection. Ahead it's a dark hall, to the right is a room and the left is a dark hall. A rusted metal signpost stands at the intersection with an arrow pointing west reads ―Da‘ Dragon‘s Den. They check out the room to the east and see a bunch of junk and 3 cobras slithering around the junk piles. The crew heads back the way they came and continue north skipping the west corridor thinking maybe they can skip this da dragon.
On the right side is a closed door about 50' north. They open it and see bodies/corpses piled up neatly along the walls. Giant rats and nibbling away at them. Again, the crew backs out slowly and close the door.
They continue north and get to a T. They decide to hang back and let the thief sneak down the left corridor. He very quietly reaches a room where he can see around 8 kobolds working on what looks like a trap and fixing one of the walls. Even the guards they placed at the entrance don't see the thief and he reports back to the crew. They decide not to engage and take the right corridor at the T.
They see a dark hall in front of them as they head West. They can't quite see the end of the hall when they reach a corridor leading to the South. The see a door to their right (west) and opens the door. They walk in a see on the far wall a bearded human head (10‘ tall) with an open sparkling mouth and crystal eyes. It says "hello" and "feed me" they toss a gold piece in the mouth and it disappears. The mouth introduces himself as " Rocky" and that he will answer up to three questions. They ask:
1.) Where are the dwarves? (At the market)
2.) Where is the market? (250' south of here)
3.) Where is the signet ring we seek? (Just west of here)
They try to give him more coins, but he isn't talking anymore. The crew decides to head all the way back to the staircase room. They get there and see 3 giant centipedes. They back out and wait in the hallway for about 20 minutes and the centipedes are gone. The choose the corridor and door to the north east and search around 3 adjoining rooms and don't find much but a busted old kitchen and lots of old adventures debris. Old shields and broken armor pieces. They go back and there are some Kobolds making their way directly towards the door you are exiting. You exchange a few primitive grunts and finally the magic user offers them a Gold piece to let them pass. The druid tosses it to the floor and the Kobolds start fighting over it. The PCs carefully move on and head towards the south eastern corridor.
We stop here for the night
Here is the area which we covered.
