Session 10: Tales from the Crypt

day 14

When we last left our weary adventurers, they were debating their next steps in the evil secret altar room.  Around them are the scattered remains of the rats and a dead fish swimming around the altar pool.  Gregoire is angry and wants to smite the cultists for this grotesque mockery of all that is good and holy. (The others just want to get treasure) He convinces the rest that they need to go after them.

As the group makes their way out the door, they see some bodies about 30 or so feet from the altar room's entrance. On closer inspection they recognize two dead goblin like creatures as well as what looks like a dwarf with grayish skin.  Definitely not one of the dwarves from Snorri Bouldershoulder's team of architects. He is still breathing but looks pretty bad.  The group decides to help.  They drag him back into the altar room and shut the door.  The cleric casts a heal and he recovers from his wounds.

TaGar comes to from his near-death experience and looks around with shifty eyes and has a concerned look on his face.  That only lasts for a split second before he smiles and thanks the group for saving him.  He insists he probably would have been ok but thanks all the same.
TaGar tells the group how he was captured and held hostage by the very group of cultists that the group is looking for. TaGar recognizes some of the loot you have picked up, one of the plate pieces has a symbol on it he realizes was from the elf cleric he was captured with.  His name was Tomoire the enlightened.  The group puts this together and understands that this is the name of the adventurer the elf was looking for in town.  You found the signet ring and didn’t know it!

TaGar admits he knows how to get to the cultists hideout in the dungeon but is extremely hesitant to go.  He was on his way out of the dungeon when he was jumped by some goblins.  As far as TaGar knows all of his group were killed by the cultists running their weird body modification experiments.  He didn’t stick around to verify.  After looking at the map we had he is willing to lead the to the cultist’s hideout.

The PCs end up back in the crypts.  A cold and unnatural chill permeates the body of all who enter. Harforth (hire) is getting nervous and visibly trembling.  The other two hires are a bit edgy as well. They decide to attack one of the fire beetles eating lichen.  They get one and harvest its glowing guts and the antennas. They end up going down the same hallway that they went down before, passing the looted crypts along the way.  Two more doors are shut but before anyone can decide what to do a shambling group of skeletons make their way aggressively towards the group.  The cleric calls upon his gods but is unsuccessful since he didn’t have a good view of the skeletons in the narrow hallway. The thief and the druid's cat jump into two crypts right across from each other and wait for the skellys to pass them.  The thief takes his new blade and smashes one of the skellys, his blade bursts into flame on contact and caught one of them on fire. The rest go down quite easily.  The cat takes some damage but otherwise shakes it off.

The group keeps moving down the hallway.  On either side are two doors.  One is open and is a spiral stairway that leads down.  The walls are covered with blood and the walls are covered with peeling frescoes of slaves digging tunnels; crude pictographs of lizard-like humanoids cavorting, hunting & worshipping. The other side is a door leading to a room full of junk and debris. Piles of rotted burial lines, smashed urns, broken weapons, tools & armor; empty rotten coffins & crumbling sarcophagi; bas-reliefs of animal-headed figures.  While searching a pile of junk a funny looking spider pops out, its about 5 feet long and ugly!  The spider is quickly destroyed and TaGar harvests the poison and puts it in a vial. The half orc finds a blue gem in the rubble.  The door on the east side of the room is closed and the thief decides to just open it and look inside.  Its dark and quite big, he hears flapping and sees some feathery looking things flying around.  He promptly kicks the door shut before they can fly their way into the room.

The group decides to move on and they reach another turning point.  They can go west down a hall or east.  One person has a look to the west and sees more double stone doors with the dance macabre etched into the stone.  It looks the same as the entrance they used to get into the crypts earlier.  To the east the group sees a room with a crumbling stone bridge over a pit.  This is the way that TaGar came he said.  We should go that way if you want to reach the cultists base.

While everyone is discussing the next move the druid thinks he wants to see if there is a way around the bridge, which looks sketchy.  The room with the flappy looking things is the way he wants to go.  He convinces the hires to go along with his plan and the others file their way into the room full of junk.  The druid makes himself invisible to the animals in the other room and creeps around checking it out.  The south part of the room indeed has a way to get to the other side of the bridge.  They will just need to get rid the flappy bird things in the room.  Without much warning the druid throws a javelin at one of the flappy birds. He becomes visible and the others are forced to join him in combat.  He demands the hires join him first and the rest of the team reluctantly file in after.

The fight begins.  The feathery birds with long stinger like beaks start to go after the group.  One attacks the cleric!  It latches onto his arm and won’t let go!  He finally shakes it off but it does some damage.  2 of the flappy things attack poor Ool and latch onto his face.  He goes down pretty quick and is dead.  The group shots crossbows and cuts into the air until they are all dead.  In the center of the room is a crumbling altar.  The group searches and finds a gold necklace with a red gem on it.  While the others are recovering from battle the hires Harforth and Hursus are off in the corner whispering to each other loudly.  Harforth has tears in his eyes and Hursus looks red with rage.  They are looking and pointing at the horrific scene of their poor dead friend.
